Do Musicians Have a Special Venus in Their Stars? A Journey Through Data Science and Astronomy
Imagine taking nearly 2,000 famous musicians throughout history, calculating the exact position of the planet Venus on the day they were born, and searching for a "secret pattern" in the sky that explains their talent. Sounds fascinating, right?
Traditionally, people believed that Venus (associated with art and beauty) or its alignment with Neptune (associated with inspiration) influenced musical ability. To test whether this is real or just a popular myth, we used Python and data science to analyze planet positions in a group of musicians (N = 1,826) and compared them against a randomly generated control group.
1. The First Puzzle: Morning Venus vs. Evening Venus
In the sky, Venus is visible either before sunrise (Morning Star) or right after sunset (Evening Star). We split our group of musicians to see if one phase appeared more often than the other.
- Result: 49.67% were born with Morning Venus, and 50.33% with Evening Venus.
- The Statistical Verdict: We used a test called Chi-Square (χ²), which measures if an observed pattern is different from random chance (like flipping a coin). We got a p-value of 0.77.
What is a p-value?
It tells us how likely a result happened by pure luck. In science, if a p-value is greater than 0.05, it means there is no real difference from random chance. A p-value of 0.77 proves that being born under Morning or Evening Venus is as random as getting heads or tails on a coin toss.
2. The Elongation Trap: A Revealing "False Positive"
When measuring elongation (the angle distance between the Sun and Venus), the graph for musicians showed two huge peaks around ±46°. At first glance, it looked like a breakthrough: musicians were overwhelmingly born during maximum elongations!
However, science requires us to ask whether the cause is artistic talent or planetary motion.
- The Astronomical Cause: As seen from Earth, Venus reaches its maximum distance from the Sun and slows down before changing direction. It spends much more time at those outer points than passing across the Sun.
- Control Group and KS-Test: We created a control group of random birth dates and compared both curves using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (KS-test).
- Result: Both curves matched almost perfectly with a p-value of 0.7993 (KS Statistic = 0.0214). The peak was not caused by musical ability, but by Kepler's laws of motion.
3. Venus-Neptune Angles: Geometry or Chance?
We evaluated the four main geometric angles between Venus and Neptune using a standard range (±6°): Conjunction (0°), Square (90°), Trine (120°), and Opposition (180°).
- Conjunction (0°): 3.18% in Musicians vs. 3.29% in Control
- Square (90°): 6.68% in Musicians vs. 5.86% in Control
- Trine (120°): 6.46% in Musicians vs. 6.68% in Control
- Opposition (180°): 3.83% in Musicians vs. 2.96% in Control
The Chi-Square test gave χ² = 2.2714 and a p-value of 0.5188, proving that these specific angles appear purely by chance.
4. Active Angles vs. No Angles
As a final test, we grouped everyone with any active main angle (about 20% of the group) and compared them to those with no main angles (about 80%).
- Result: χ² = 1.0060 and p-value = 0.3158.
- Meaning: Musicians and everyday people have active Venus-Neptune setups at the exact same rate.
Bonus Track: Why Didn't We Test Astrological Houses?
You might wonder: "What about the 2nd House (talents), 5th House (passions), or 11th House (projects)?" Couldn't Venus or Neptune sitting in those places explain a musician's success?
Testing houses in data science requires an extreme level of precision: the exact birth time. Because the Earth rotates 360 degrees every 24 hours, astrological houses shift every two hours! A difference of just 15 to 30 minutes can push Venus or Neptune into a completely different house.
Unfortunately, historical public databases like Wikidata rarely record exact birth minutes for thousands of people. Attempting to guess birth times would introduce random noise, destroying the statistical validity of our study.
This reveals a crucial lesson for real-world astrology: precision matters. If you ever seek an accurate personal chart reading, general birth dates aren't enough. Having your official birth certificate on hand—or even better, double-checking with your mother's memory if possible—is essential to get the exact birth time needed to calculate your true house placements.
Beyond the Numbers: Astrology, Synchronicity, and Personal Experience
There is a profound difference between public stardom and the inner passion for art. Data science algorithms analyze binary outcomes: Is this person a famous, commercially successful musician in a database? But statistics cannot measure the deep personal joy of holding an instrument, recording music out of pure love, or feeling a visceral connection to sound without seeking fame or financial reward.
Isolating Venus or expecting a single geometric angle to act as a mechanical formula oversimplifies both science and astrology. Astrology predicts cyclical themes at an archetypal level, but it does not dictate the precise details of how the story ends. After all, knowing the exact outcome in advance would ruin the experience—much like having the ending of a great book or movie spoiled before you even start reading. Instead, astrology operates through synchronicity: a birth chart is an unfolding story with an unpredictable plot where planetary cycles reflect the evolving themes of our lives without stripping away our freedom to write the final chapter.
Statistical tests like Chi-Square and KS-tests do not "disprove" the beauty or personal validity of astrology. They simply show that planetary geometry alone does not work as a factory assembly line for celebrity status. True artistic sensitivity isn't determined by a single cosmic placement, but by how we choose to live, express, and navigate the mysterious plot of our own journey here on Earth.
